Industry insiders weigh in on the buzz surrounding Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64prY_OAoHg

New York, NY — Cash Money/Universal Motown Records multi-platinum recording artist Lil Wayne expands his dynasty with Tha Carter III. The new CD is the biggest release by far for 2008, selling over 1 Million copies it’s first week, reigning #1 on Nielsen SoundScan, besting Mariah Carey’s record-breaking release earlier this year. Not since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005 has an artist sold over 1 Million albums their first week. “This is truly a proud moment for the Cash Money family, says Cash Money co-founder Ronald ‘Slim’ Williams. “Lil Wayne is truly changing the game of hip-hop.” Cash Money co-founder Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams adds “I knew my son had it in him, and this just proves what I’ve been saying all along. Lil Wayne is the most talented rapper out there right now, and these numbers prove it.”

“This is a landmark week for Lil Wayne and for our company,” said Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone. “Wayne has not only scored by far the biggest debut of the year, but the highest first week sales in Universal Motown history. He has energized his fans and the retail community by delivering a seminal, original album that defines the state-of-the-art in hip-hop. Wayne’s explosive success proves that when the music is there, the consumer is there. This is an event release from a genius artist who represents and speaks for youth culture. ‘Tha Carter III’ had a brilliant set-up, and I want to thank my entire Universal Motown team and our colleagues at Cash Money for all the hard work, devotion, and enthusiasm that made this day a reality.”

GQ Magazine (2007) called him the “greatest rapper in the world,” proclaiming him Man of the Year, and Blender Magazine (2008) declared him the “Best Rock Star Alive.” Lil Wayne lives up to widespread critical acclaim garnering over 216 million in radio audience at Crossover and Urban radio. The talented rappers stronghold at radio extends to holding the #1 position at Crossover for nine straight weeks.

Two singles from Tha Carter III simultaneously blitz the Top Ten mainstream radio charts including the smash hit “Lollipop” at #2 and “A Milli” at #9, tagged as a Greatest Gainer. With these impressive figures, he eclipses Kanye West by nearly 10,000 units in first week performance. A dozen major retailers including Amazon, Circuit City, Kmart, Target and Walmart show Lil Wayne outselling West since the album dropped on June 10.

Star power sizzles for Lil Wayne, as a follow-up to his biggest solo effort, the multi-platinum Tha Carter II. With success squarely in the bag, Lil Wayne worked diligently to produce Tha Carter III and the result is a carefully honed masterpiece.

Lil Wayne was born and raised in the infamous poverty-stricken section of New Orleans- the 17th Ward. His rise to stardom came in 1995 at the tender age of 12 when he made his debut on his former label mates’ B.G’s True Story CD. Shortly thereafter, the rap prodigy garnered national attention as a member of the group, Hot Boys, which consisted of rappers Juvenile, Turk and B.G., with their 1997 debut album, Get It How You Live, followed by 1998’s platinum certified Guerilla Warfare and 2003’s Let Em Burn. Success continued to follow Lil Wayne, as a solo artist, his debut CD, 1999’s Tha Block Is Hot reached platinum status and was a #1 Billboard Album. He later released in 2000, Lights Out, 500Degreez in 2002 and his defining album, 2004’s gold certified, Tha Carter, which featured the hit single “Go DJ.”

Since the release of his last CD, the platinum selling Tha Carter II, Lil Wayne has guest appearances on over 70 songs for other artists including Fat Joe’s 2008 Grammy nominated single “Make It Rain,” DJ Khaled’s “We Taking Over,” and Wyclef Jeans’ “Sweetest Girl.” He also released a duet CD with Bryan “Birdman” Williams titled Like Father, Like Son in 2006 which was a critical and commercial success.

Lil Wayne heralds Tha Carter III, as ‘The album he was born to make.’

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day focuses on combatting childhood obesity

Posted by bigced on June 19, 2008

The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is an annual event celebrating Hip Hop Culture and the borough of Brooklyn as a premier cultural destination. Now entering its fourth year, the BHF has become a staple of Summer in NYC.

This year Brooklyn Bodega and F.O.K.U.S. are establishing a new tradition, Brooklyn Hip Hop Family Day. From Noon to 4pm, babies, toddlers, young teens and families are encouraged to head down to beautiful Empire Fulton Ferry State Park for an afternoon of Hip-Hop, community building, and fun.

The goal of Hip-Hop Family Day is two fold. One, organizers want to address the epidemic of childhood obesity and the diseases associated with it, plaguing our community. Asthma and diabetes are virtual plagues in Brooklyn and throughout New York City. As cultural programmers, Brooklyn Bodega felt it was their responsibility to use the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival as a platform to address this issue.

Secondly, Family Day is part of the Festival’s mission to return Hip-Hop to its roots of social activism. Wes Jackson, Festival Executive Director, “Hip-Hop was created as a tool to quell gang violence in the Bronx. Now to many, Hip-Hop is synonymous with violence, misogyny, and materialism. That is not the Hip-Hop culture I live. My Hip-Hop is about education, self awareness, and empowerment. This is the mission of the Festival as a whole. With Family Day we are once again using Hip-Hop to save lives. We want the kids to come out for the free magazines, T-shirts, and CD’s. While they’re here we’ll help them control their asthma, screen their mom’s blood sugar, and teach them about Breakdancing’s four hundred year old Brazilian pre-cursor, Capoeira.”

On July 12th from 12pm -3pm families will able to participate in team building challenges, creative projects, and cultural trivia. There will also be visual arts, dance & movement demonstrations. Activities will be geared to enhance the mind, body and spirit.

Brooklyn Bodega, and Family Day co-producer, F.O.K.U.S., have done a great job of marrying the two Family Day concepts by bringing together a coalition of community groups as well as local and international brands. Participants include Truth.com and their anti- smoking/tobacco initiative, Metropolitan Hospital who will be offering diabetes and asthma screenings, “Made in NY” Film PA training program, and The Brooklyn Crescents Youth Lacrosse Club. There will also be a KidsZone with various activities to exercise bodies in a fun & creative way.

More Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day participants will be announced soon.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day will feature music, free giveaways, great food, dance, art and a whole lot of fun. All are encouraged to stay for the performances which will begin at 4pm from KRS ONE and others.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day will take place July 12th, from 12 noon – 4 p.m at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park located at the corner of Plymouth and Main Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Children, families, teenagers are all welcome.

Performances will begin promptly following Family Day.

HARDCORE HIP HOP IN HEAVEN: “O2 PRAISE” PUTS HIP-HOP TO THE TEST

Posted by bigced on June 19, 2008

UrbanGospelMixtape.com Founder DJ RISE (on-air personality at WHCR 90.3 FM) created a strategic alliance with powerful Urban Marketing team LIGHTHOUSE UMP to present urban youths seeking a voice an outlet through Object of Our (02) Praise 3-day Youth Conference.  Cameo Appearances from renowned artists To Be Announced.  In the heart of Brooklyn on Saturday, July 26th 2008, O2 Praise promises to bring young people in numbers for a night of praise, positive thinking (workshops) and prayer.  Performances will range from dramatic skits, “praise”-stepping, reggae, hip hop, worship and refreshments on site.

“Hip-Hop has had a history of community empowerment and creating music and poetry reflective of everyday life in our neighborhoods.  Modern-day Hip-Hop has emerged into the endorsement of violence and glam by any means necessary.  Urban youth are impressionable and most influenced by the music and culture of today’s Hip Hop which goes beyond the studio, but into film, sports, business/marketing and education.  Hip Hop has been known to produce massive sales, new trends, new ideas… let’s see if we can use this tool to save and welcome new souls to a JESUS that looks, dresses and talks like they do.”  – MarcArthur St. Juste, Founder, UrbanGospelMixtape.com, co-producer of “O2 Praise” Youth Conference.

“It’s time for the church to stop acting like we (youth) are not listening to it (hip hop).  We need another choice that isn’t all about shooting and sex.  I thank God that an event like O2 Praise is happening.  I’m gonna get my praise on listening to Hip Hop that brings souls to Heaven…straight-up.”  – Anonymous 16 year old.

”The amount of support that we have received from our community gives me restored faith in humanity.  We are here to make a difference and the best way is to reach one, teach one and guide one. O2 Praise will have youths learning conflict mediation, decision-making, stress-coping, and progressive self-empowerment tools in workshops provided and programming in a way that they don’t know they’re learning.  God is great and I’m looking forward to a big turnout.” – DJ RISE, On-Air Personality, WHCR 90.3 FM – “The Voice of Harlem”

REV RUN PRESENTS TEAM BLACKOUT – DEBUT LP, LIGHTS OUT, TO BE RELEASED ON 8-19-08

Posted by bigced on June 19, 2008

If you’ve been following the hit MTV reality series Run’s House starring Reverend Run (of Run-DMC), then you already know about the hip-hop trio Team Blackout. Team Blackout consists of Rev Run’s teenage son JoJo Simmons and his childhood friends Zach, and Reggie. The Queens / Long Island natives have been rhyming together since the 7th grade, but it wasn’t until the 2003 New York City Blackout that JoJo, Zach and Reggie decided to officially unite and form Team Blackout – hence the name.

Since then, they’ve been honing their craft, in the studio, on stage and even on TV. For the past four-years, millions of Run’s House fans have watched Team Blackout develop, on-air, into a full-fledged group to look out for. In 2007, they landed their first record deal with NY / LA based indie label Latchkey Recordings (distributed via Koch Entertainment). Team Blackout immediately hit the studio to record their debut album, Lights Out, in stores 8/19/2008. Lights Out was produced entirely by upcoming production duo Chris n Teeb (Danity Kane, Salt N Pepa), Grammy award winning producer Rockwilder and Ron Browz.  Rev Run serves as the LP’s executive producer.

Lyrically, Lights Out is fun and carefree, bringing back a feel good vibe that’s been missing in today’s hip-hop music.  Sonically, Chris n Teeb, Rockwilder and Ron Browz deliver a heavy dose of slick, futuristic sounds – perfect for the radio and clubs. JoJo Simmons states “we’ve got hot music, so it’s gonna be hard for people to say we only got a break just because I’m Reverend Run’s son. People are gonna be surprised.”

Season 5 of MTV’s Run’s House kicks off this summer, with more of Team Blackout’s steady rise in the music biz. Keep an eye open for Team Blackout’s upcoming video for “Billion Dollar Boyfriend” and be sure to check out their internet buzz video “J5 On ‘Em”, produced by Ron Browz (Nas, G-Unit), featuring DJ Webstar and Boogie Black.  Fans of Run’s House loved the J5 dance from season four and continually sent messages asking for more, so Team Blackout hit them with a summer dance anthem for the kids.

With Team Blackout’s drive and Rev Run as mentors, JoJo, Zach & Reggie have a bright future ahead. But in the meantime, get ready for them to put your lights out this summer.

Tanya Morgan – “Be You” featuring Czelena

The Song:

A bona fide summer jam, Tanya Morgan’s “Be You” glazes a feel good, 70s- TV-theme-esque beat with a thick layer of sweet and tangy lyricism. With lengthy, rapid-fire rhymes like “Now you can be a disser / but I see the bigger picture / and you aren’t in the frame / like my dark skinned sisters,” Tanya Morgan satisfies the local revolutionary and even the pretentious poet.

The Backgournd:

In 2003, Brooklyn resident Von Pea teamed up with Cincinnati’s Donwill and Ilyas to form Tanya Morgan. Three years later, the group’s Moonlighting LP took the rap world by storm, receiving a 3.5 mic rating from The Source and high praise in XXL’s Chairman’s Choice column. Donwill describes the group’s uniqueness and appeal: “Instead of jam-packing our releases with different producers and guest emcees for attention, we carefully choose who we work with because we make it a priority to cultivate our own sound and identity. We look to groups like Eric B and Rakim, who honed their own sound and rarely collaborated with other artists.” After a brief hiatus from center stage, the crew is back in 2008 seeking the hip-hop triple crown: the release of a mixtape, EP, and LP, all in the same year. Tonya Morgan has performed with Ghostface Killah and has had videos featured on multiple MTV channels. The Bridge EP is available now on via Bay Area label Interdependent Media.

LOCAL NEW ORLEANS ARTIST SCORES BIG AS OPENING ACT FOR LIL WAYNE’S CARTER THREE TOUR STOP ONE

Posted by bigced on June 19, 2008

New Orleans’ latest Hip-Hop sensation Pallo the Jiint (pronounced Giant) adds another notch to his limitless list of accomplishments as opening act for Lil Wayne’s album tour. Riding off the success of his runaway independent single “Long Way From Home (Bounce Back)” remix, Pallo will start the show as Wayne kicks off the first stop of The Carter 3 album tour at the Cajun Dome in Lafeyette, La. on Friday, June 27.

After coming home with The Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype competition in Baton Rogue last year and laying down tracks for Lil Wayne’s seminal album The Drought, Pallo is set to tear of the stage to a crowd of thousands. “Long Way From Home (Bounce Back)” remix has already been burning up Gulf Coast radio stations and dance floors with its uptempo, bounce-influenced production and Pallo’s uplifting message to displaced, post-Hurricane Katrina evacuees from his city.

“This is a great feeling. I can hardly wait,” says Pallo. “In my shows, I give you everything you want- from the music to the talent to the swagger. I entertain. And that’s one big thing that a lot of artists are lacking.”

Born and raised in New Orleans’ Mid-City section, music has been a part of Pallo’s life for as far back as he can remember. From a family of musicians, he is the cousin of renowned jazz musician Donald Harrison, and he also has family members who are a part of Rebirth and Hot 8 brass bands. Getting his start in Hip-Hop as a producer, Pallo laid down tracks for many of New Orleans’ most famous and influential artists including local bounce artist Kilo and platinum artist B.G.

Now, no longer behind the production boards, Pallo brings that same fire on the keyboards to the vocal booth. On the album’s dynamic title track,Pallo chants rough and rugged rhymes over his city’s trademark bounce-laden production. And on the B.G.-assisted “Want No Trouble,” firmly establishes himself as his city’s second coming. And on “Game Ain’t Dead,” where he shares the booth with the late Pimp C (RIP) and UGK Records artist Vicious to school us all on the possible pitfalls and come-ups in the streets.

Pallo’s independent debut album Better Believe It is scheduled to be released late Summer and is full of certified bangers.   But even before Better Believe It even hit the streets, the major labels have been clamoring over the product. Pallo has been approached by such major labels as Columbia, Universal, Geffen and Koch for national distribution.

Check out Pallo da Jiint on myspace.  Hear his singles Long Way From Home Remix and Dey Say!
