MILLION DJ MARCH TO DESCEND UPON WASHINGTON, DC IN AUGUST

MILLION DJ MARCH TO DESCEND UPON WASHINGTON, DC IN AUGUST

CASTING LIGHT UPON THE ECONOMIC DESPARITIES DJ’S FACE WITHIN?

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

HIGHLIGHTS TO INCLUDE THE INTRODUCTION OF PLANS FOR A DJ’S UNION

Washington, DC – The economic plight of the deejay within the music industry is to be the focus of a three day event in Washington, DC in August with rallies and activities beginning August 28, 2008 and organizers are expecting the attendance of deejays from around the world. The event will culminate in a Million DJ March from the Capitol Building to the Washington Monument on August 30th and its message is attracting not only deejays and deejay organizations, but civil rights activists as well. Plans for an organized union for deejays to assist them with things like 401k’s and gig compensation security, is expected to be introduced at this time, which attending deejays will be encouraged to sign up for.

Long recognized as the backbone of the music industry without which records could not be broken, deejays are generally the least compensated members of the music equation and are, in fact, often harassed and legally penalized for thier promotional efforts even when those efforts have been solicited directly by the labels and artists themselves: an arrangement that is known about throughout the industry but kept ‘on the low’.

Founder of the Million DJ March, A. Shaw, a long-time sponsor of Justo’s Mixtape Awards, which was started to highlight those deejays that had made the biggest contributions within the industry in a given year, felt compelled to address the economic disparity deejays experience after many years of working with them through various channels. “DJ’s do not get fully recognized for the work they do.”She says.” Label and major businesses who reap the rewards of default publicity need to pay attention and give more recognition and financial compensation to DJ’s for the promotion they provide, without which music sales would surely suffer.”

The team for this event includes Sommer McCoy, who is responsible for booking talent and speakers and DJ Green Lantern, who is the main poster boy for the March. Sponsors and attendees will be able to watch artist performances and hear the speeches of music industry leaders and founding deejays, highlighting deejays’ decades of service to the industry. “I am calling upon the industry to show support for an event to unify deejays and help create future economic safety for those that have chosen this art form as a career.” A. Shaw says in closing.

BOSTON’S J THE S PREPS RELEASE OF HIS SECOND STREET-LP, WHEN IN ROME…

Posted by bigced on May 8, 2008

New years demand fresh tactics.  So when Jake the Snake moved to New York this year to pen his new release, When in Rome, he shed his skin and emerged from underground a tougher, more enlightened J the S.

At this point, Snake has amassed as strong a career as an MC can build in Boston.  Before he could legally buy alcohol, he graduated from the local battle circuit and begun to script vicious narratives.  In just four years, J the S dropped two internationally distributed full-length albums and a pair of venomous mixtapes, landed singles on Rap Network, Rap Attack Lives and CMJ charts, and enjoyed rotation on more than 300 college radio stations including Boston’s renown WERS, where he earned “Artist of the Month” honors in June 2007.

On the strength of his 2006 album, Strategy of the Crown, which featured guests including Ras Kass, Trife Da God and Devin the Dude, J the S followed up with his DJ Vlad-hosted Year of the Snake Vol. 2.  The sequel to his Peter Parker-hosted Vol. 1, the mixtape proved that he could rock consecutive projects with – or without – headliner associates.  Featuring limited assists from Boston cronies such as Loose Notes and his own Greater Good crew, J the S gave fans enough original material to choke on until now.

In May 2008, J the S drops his most important project yet.  Beyond cameos from the likes of Joell Ortiz, Skyzoo, Slaine and Ras Kass, When in Rome introduces rap fans to an MC whose pilgrimage to Hip-Hop’s pinnacle was a long, disciplined and rewarding journey.

Though he was bred in Boston, J the S spent his first years in the West Indies, where his father hustled.  After his mother got concerned and relocated to Massachusetts, a young Snake was introduced to criminal elements on the street and at home.  A volatile domestic situation and negative role models inspired a notebook full of rhymes, as well as a dedication rarely seen in young artists.

Despite coming up in Boston behind underground icons such as Mr. Lif and Esoteric, J the S remained faithful to blacktop Hip-Hop.  As a result, he became a regular show opener for hardcore artists such as Kool G Rap, Cormega, The Beatnuts, Boot Camp and Wu-Tang.  Beyond his East Coast ethos, J the S is also marked by his experience as a middle school teacher and his socially progressive mission, which has landed him on bills alongside Dead Prez, Brand Nubian and KRS-ONE.

“I’m an intelligent artist, but I’m more about pimping the system before it pimps you than I am about some unrealistic optimism,” J the S says.  “I tell stories and innovate too, but I’m not on some backpacker nerd shit either.”

He might be an anomaly, but J the S is poised to be a factor in roughneck Hip-Hop’s return to form.  With his When in Rome (which will feature collaborations with fellow rising stars Skyzoo (“Pump”), Slaine (“Get Low” Remix) and Joell Ortiz (“Do You”) prequel this March and subsequent third album, The Last Days, coming next year, he is determined to penetrate rap music’s commercial consciousness.  If he can pull it off in Boston, where pushing Golden Age street styles is less common than being a Republican, he can do it anywhere.

For What It’s Worth
Available on ITunes next Tuesday

sas

New York, NY

There has never been a shortage of talent to hail from the borough of Queens. With its Hall of Fame heralding names such as Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep, Nas, LL Cool J and the legendary Run DMC. For the boroughs up and coming artists, these are predominantly hard names to follow.

Queens Village however boasts Spectacula, a devoted lyricist whose debut album will be hitting shelves on May 13th, 2008. For What Its Worth is a combination of street savvy punch lines complemented by tracks that accentuate conceptuality ensuring the listener a well rounded album; traits that are more often than not denied into today’s musical haven.

Having already enthralled the streets and the Internet with his DJ Noodles hosted mixtape Paid in Full and his  Networth production hosted by DJ Nuke Knocka, Spectacula is confident that this project will display his ability to provide for all pallets and yet stay true to what he believes an entertainer to be.

“My favorite MCs growing up didn’t stick to any formulas, they would set the bar and try to out do themselves. I apply those same standards to my own music today because I feel the lack of artist trying to out do themselves and the constant reusing of formulas is the reason Hip-Hop is in the state its in today. “

Stand out tracks on the album are undoubtedly the sure hit Three Greats. Produced by New York production trio, The Heatmakerz, who provide Spectacula with a soulful backdrop for him to paint his lyrical picture. The track tells the story of the women and girls who have made an impact on the lyricist throughout the years which he defines as his ‘three great loves.’

Relatable to many, Spectacula injects a vast dose of reality into the verses and songs delivered on For What its Worth.  The Abilliontrillion produced Monster tackles HIV and AIDS, a topic that the rapper feels the need to be discussed. “Rappers always pride themselves on being ‘real’ while always talking about what’s going on in the ‘hood’; for an issue that affects such a high percentage of people in the ‘hood’ not to be discussed is unacceptable to me.”

The Bad News assisted Politically Correct reflects the generic sense of unease running through the veins of hip-hop; this track is literally an ode to the fine lines walked by purveyors of the genre. With the rock infused production also crafted by Bad News, heralding hard drums and guitar rifts Spectacula puts his frustrations with the negativity implicated by certain public figures out to the masses with this lyrical evaluation.

Spectacula has already secured the attention of certain media platforms in countries beyond the USA. “I am hoping that by releasing this album on I Tunes it will allow my fan base in countries such as the UK and Germany to get my album as easily as those in the US.” With his mind set on maintaining and encouraging a greater international presence, Spectacula understands that in the age of digital progression, this is inevitable when providing stellar projects.

For What it’s Worth and its creator are a fine example of what coming up in an area rich in Hip-Hop culture can equate to.  Without a doubt Spectacula has learned from the greats and respects the work they put in for performers such as him to progress in the music industry.  But he knows that it is time for him to put to use all the lessons learned and emerge as another name for that Hall of Fame.

SOHH.com, the internet’s longest and largest running hip-hop website with over 5.5 million visitors monthly, announced today their partnership with author and former entertainment executive Terrance Dean to launch a new blog titled “Confessions of a Down Low Brother.” Coinciding with the release of his new controversial book, “Hiding in Hip-Hop: On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry – From Music to Hollywood (Atria/Simon & Schuster)” hitting stores on May 13, Dean will be updating the blog regularly for the next two weeks highlighting his own experiences and thoughts on a variety of debatable topics. The blog will be featured on SOHH.com (http://blogs.sohh.com/confessions/) as well as SOHH’s sister site, Twelve24Girl.com, a lifestyle and social networking website targeted towards females ages 12-24.

The “Confessions of…” blog is a regular series featured on Twelve24Girl.com providing people the opportunity to share their real-life stories. Dean will be elaborating on compelling stories and personal anecdotes that were not included within his upcoming book.

Dean’s latest project is an explosive and provocative memoir that will uncover the prominent gay sub-culture that hides behind the confines of hip-hop. The book highlights his own personal struggle with the issue and the emotional rollercoaster of becoming involved with some of Hollywood’s and hip-hop’s elite A-listers, and into an underground world of down low brothers, sex parties, and love starved celebrities.

Dean has over 10 years of entertainment industry experience with several television and film production companies such as MTV Networks, B.E.T., Savoy Television, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Sony Pictures working on projects alongside heavy hitters such as Spike Lee, Rob Reiner, Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Anjelica Houston. Dean’s first best-selling book, “Reclaim Your Power!” assists men with daily reminders of meaningful spiritual meditations that can be practiced anywhere and at anytime.

“Twelve24Girl.com and SOHH.com are ideal platforms for me to voice my personal anecdotes and thoughts about the topic of my upcoming book, Hiding in Hip-Hop,” said Terrance Dean. “The sites speak to such a wide audience and am thrilled to provide a blog that can self empower and provide a foundation of support for others to be free and accepting of who they are.”
