BUZZING WEST COAST COLLECTIVE CUSTOM MADE UNVEIL THEIR MAY 27th SOPHOMORE OPUS, “ORIGINAL DYNASTY,” ON BABYGRANDE RECORDS

Dubbed a cross between N.W.A., Mobb Deep & The Wu-Tang Clan, Custom Made is a buzzing West Coast collective/movement consisting of some of LA’s most renowned up and coming emcees.

Formed in 2003 (though their ties began during their days as high school classmates) the group originally consisted of Sinister Six, Bluff, Element, Skandalous Scoobs and Aneek.

After the release of their 2004 debut, “L.A. State of Mind,” Six found himself incarcerated, but the movement persisted through Custom Made’s renowned “Street Cinema” mixtape series. 2006 saw Custom Made inking with indie powerhouse Babygrande Records and the debut offering “Sidewalk Mindtalk: The Best of The Custom Made Mixtapes,” a collection of gems from their prolific mixtape series, garnered critical raves within the independent circuit.

Most recently, Custom Made has garnered support from LA’s renowned mixtape DJ DJ Warrior as well as recently appearing on LA’s Power 106 Wake Up Show (link below).

Seminal hip-hop brand Rawkus recently bestowed upon Custom Made Rawkus Next 50 honors, designating the group/collective amongst the best and brightest developing acts in the independent scene.

Buckshot, Bilal, Ladybug Mecca and others join Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival

Posted by bigced on May 7, 2008

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, BrooklynBodega and boomBoom NYC made their first artist announcement today. Joining the month long celebration of Hip-Hop culture and the borough of Kings are Brooklyn and Duck Down’s own Buckshot and Smif N Wessun, Neo Soul king Bilal, Mecca The Ladybug from the legendary Digable Planets, Chip Fu, as well as Chris Dave.

More announcements are to come and organizers have assured this is just a taste of what is shaping up to be a monumental event.

“We are honored to be joined by the likes of Buckshot, Bilal and Mecca. Buckshot is the original Brooklyn MC and he and the Boot Camp Clik/Duck Down family have been very supportive of the Festival from day one. We are happy to bring him home to perform in Brooklyn on the heels of his new album “The Formula” with 9th Wonder,” said Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson. “Bilal performances are far too rare as far as we are concerned. We are looking forward to a sampling of all that new material he has been working on,” Jackson continued. “And what can you say about Mecca? She has been repping for Brooklyn ever since she took home the Grammy with Digable Planets. This is going to be a great year for the Festival. Our best so far. Guaranteed.”

Tickets for the Main Day are available at www.brooklyn bodega.com for a suggested donation of $10 patrons can have their tickets for the main day on July 12th mailed to them or pick them up at an official Festival retail location. For an additional donation supporters can also receive free product from Festival sponsor The Brooklyn Brewery, premiums on site, and reduced admission to all Festival events around Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival’s mission is to provide high quality cultural programming at an economical price. To that end, producers are asking supporters for a minimum of $10 for the main date. All proceeds will be used to produce this and future Festivals.

Festival Production and Finance Director Ebonie Jackson, “We are asking everyone who attends for at least $10. At that price point the Festival is an absolute steal. Comparable events will charge in the hundreds of dollars. We won’t do that. With the help of our sponsors, partners and most importantly the donors and fans who love Hip-Hop we pledge to keep all Festival events affordable. Affordable for struggling college students, single parents, up and coming poets, t-shirt designers, transit workers, and Mister Softee truck drivers. So to everyone out there who loves old school and new school, those who love Brooklyn, and those who like us want to show the best Hip-Hop has to offer please dig in those pockets and help. Do your part and SUPPORT CELBRATE and REPRESENT. “

Bilal, Mecca, Chip Fu, Smif N Wessun, and Chris Dave will be performing at The Masonic Temple in Fort Greene on July 10th. The event is produced by boomBoom NYC in conjunction with Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Tickets are available at www.boomboo mnyc.com

Buckshot and The Boot Camp Clik will be performing at the main Festival Day at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park on July 12th.

TRAE THA TRUTH BECOMES FREE AGENT AND GOES ON NATIONAL TOUR – NEW MUSIC DOWNLOADS

Anyone who has followed the career of Trae tha Truth knows that the Houston artist is no stranger to adversity. He has overcome much to be where he is and willingly shares his experiences in his music. Trae though is not one to be kept down and has a knack for turning negatives into positives. With 2 critically acclaimed albums under his belt under Rap-A-Lot Records (Restless and Life Goes On), and a final project for that label set to drop this year (a much-anticipated group effort with ABN, including cousin and fellow rapper, Z-Ro), Trae has fullfilled his contractual obligations to the Houston label and is now a free agent. Not one to sit around and wait for things to come to him, Trae is taking to the road this month to let the world know (tour dates and cities below.)

Another classic example of Trae’s ability to turn negative experiences into postive ones was his recent live shows at the Ramsey 1 Unit of the maximum security prison in Rosharon, Texas where he made rap history. When you think of Texas and it’s criminal justice system, several things come to mind; the hanging state, the red state, 3 strikes state, lynching state, but not warm-and-fuzzy things like ‘let’s throw our prisoners a rap concert and make their day’ state. However, on March 29th, 2008 Trae took ABN members Clip and Easy, Slim Thug (himself a free agent now) and Boss Hogg Outlaws PJ-Rap Hustla and J Dawg, along with DJ Hi-C and performed 2 live shows in front of several hundred maximum security inmates.

The unprecedented shows, called Hopefest, were set up by Trae’s long-time friend, Rosey Ruiz, once an inmate herself, who now volunteers within the TDCJ (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) as a mentor and motivational speaker both for G.R.A.D. (Gang Renunciation and Disassociation) and with the general prison population on a daily basis; offering hope and inspiration to those who often have none. With many family members and close friends on lock, including his older brother Dinkie who is serving 3 consecutive life sentences, the work that Rosey does is very close to Trae’s heart making the shows mean that much more to everyone. Each of the guys performing shared their own experiences with incarceration but also stressed the fact that if they themselves could overcome and get their lives together, so could each of the inmates – a message that was met with overwhelming warmth and gratitude. More shows are planned in the coming months at different TDCJ facilities and Trae plans to invite other artists to join him in delivering this message of hope.
