The Monday Polly: Castro’s Long (and I do mean LONG) Kiss Goodnight

Right now is a really interesting time in politics. We have a woman and a black guy as potential presidents, the war on freedom, rather terrorism is going well and Cuba’s prezzo is stepping down. Whether you love him or hate him you have to respect what Fiddy’s done in his 50 year career. Who else could run up in someone’s house, mess up some stuff, get a slap on the wrist AND get kicked out only to come back and take it over? Not many get that second chance, and those that do usually learn their lessons. Not Fiddy! He is a determined cat, to be sure and one that will go down in the history books long after he passes. 50, you watching? Leave that Scarface movie alone and get on Castro’s level patna!

Are We in the Pigpen…Again?!?

Castro first made an impression with his nationalist observations on the negative influences from the then president Fulgencio Batista and the United States on the liberties of Cuba. This garnered for him a small following, enough that he would try to assault the barracks located in Santiago de Cuba on July 26, 1953 in order to make it his base for spreading propaganda to the people. Although he failed, many (himself included) saw this as the beginning of his revolutionary movement.

After his capture, he was sentenced to death, but as he was a lawyer by trade, he defended himself well enough to garner a sympathetic vote from the Roman Catholic priests and spare his life. Instead he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and in 1955, a group of the prisoner’s mothers campaigned for their son’s release, and with the help of a signed decree from some of Cuba’s top people they were freed and given full amnesty.

Castro then left Cuba for Mexico in order to train both himself and his troops for what the oncoming battle. While in Mexico, Castro met Ernesto “Che” Guevara who felt that violence was the only way to topple oppression. Guevara was essential to the molding of Castro’s political views and helped put in motion much of what current day Communistic Cuba is about. Castro’s group trained under Alberto Bayo, a Spanish civil war veteran and gained the support of the former president of Cuba Carlos Prio Socarras, who lived in exile in the United States. Armed with a working knowledge of guerilla tactics, they headed back to Cuba to try their hand once more at a revolution.

Back in Cuba on December 2, 1856, Castro’s men met fierce opposition and of the 81 men, 20 survived and regrouped. They began skirmishes in villages and town with Batista’s men, and eventually won over enough people that resistance groups sprung up to aid their cause. He would become somewhat of an international celebrity as American journalist came to interview him, his charms won over many in the United States, which bolstered the Cubans love for him.

In 1957 he signed the “Manifesto of the Sierra Maestra”; calling for elections once he came to power and reinstated the Constitution of 1940. In retaliation, Batista sent men out to crush Castro’s movement once and for all but it failed miserably due to many of Batista’s army weren’t up for the fight, often defecting to Fidel’s side. The guerilla tactics used played a large role too; never before had such unconventional means been used in Cuban warfare and it took so many by surprise that whole battalions fell before Castro. Soon afterwards, Batista and his closest relatives quietly left the office and the country. Cuba was Castro’s to command.

As the new Commander In Chief of the armed forces and the Prime Minister of Cuba, Castro saw it fit to strengthen ties with the communist USSR, a move that caused friction with the United States. When the deal for Russian oil was completed, the US broke political dealings with the country altogether. On April 17, 1961, the US sent over operatives to try and remove Castro from power. It didn’t work and it blew up in President Kennedy’s face.

About a year later, it was discovered that nuclear missiles were in the works to be shipped over to Cuba to counteract the US missiles in Turkey that were aimed at the USSR. This is what started the Cuban Missile Crisis and led to quarantine around Cuba. Any ship coming to Cuba was to be searched. Seeing how bad this could be for everyone, an agreement was made between the USSR and the US to remove all nuclear components from each side. A promise that still hasn’t been completely kept.

Castro’s reign continued from there all the way up until February 18, 2008 when he retired permanently due to illness. Some say that he has a terminal condition while others say he is totally in the clear. I came across some theories that Castro, in fact, is dead and has been dead for some time. I don’t really think he’s dead yet though, it just seems a little convenient to me.

Maybe he’s facing his own mortality and just trying to decide the best way to keep his ideals in power. To me Fidel reeks of someone who let power corrupt him. Before he came to power he talked of a democratic state and civil liberty being an absolute and even denied that he was a communist. Once he had it, all that went down the drain, much like it usually does.

I imagine that it must be tempting beyond anything one could experience to be in the position to hold an entire country in your hands. Who knows, maybe he was like that from the get go and just wanted to get in without too much opposition.  Revolutionary is right, the government went a full 360 degrees…right back to what it was before;  dictatorships and  giant boots to step on the common people’s hopes and dreams for a fair government.

It reminds me of the saying, “violence begets more violence” but in this case it’s, “coups beget more coups”. Who is the next one to come in and overthrow the government and implement a fantastic “new” one that smacks of the one before? We’ll all know soon enough when we return to the world’s favorite game show “Totalitarianism Musical Chairs!” I’m in no position to say that Castro was right or wrong but I’ll tell you what, it makes for damn fine television.

Hit me up at themondaypolly@gmail.com or leave it below…let’s keep the cipher movin’ like an Amtrak! Back at y’all next week, ghostin’!

THE REAL AMERICAN GANGSTER: LARRY DAVIS

Posted by bigced on February 25, 2008

Written by Rahiem Shabazz

Monday, 25 February 2008
larry davis.jpg

A day before the 42nd anniversary of Malcolm X’s assassination, I found myself mourning the death of my brother Shams’ best friend and nephew’s godfather, Larry Davis aka Adam Abdul-Hakeem. My brother and Larry had big dreams of becoming musical icons in the early 80’s. But, that dreamed was deferred, when 30 NYC police officers came to assassinate him for reneging on a drug deal. Heavily armed police raided his sister Gina’s apartment capo style, with guns blazing. In an effort to defend him and family he fired at the police, wounding six police officers. At the age of 19, he took the NYPD on one of the biggest manhunt in the history of the state. After 17-days, he surrendered to authorities, fought the capital attempted murder charges against the police and was acquitted. However, he was convicted of weapon possession and sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison.

When Larry opened fire on the murderous cops on that cold and chilly day back in November of 1986, he was exercising the principals of the Black Panther Party and their advocacy for the use of force against the state. This is same state that imprisoned political prisoner Mumia Abdul and Geronimo Pratt for 27 years before he was free.

I remember walking to the courthouse on 161st and Grand Concourse to support the family during of his earlier court proceedings and on the sidewall of the court were the words, “Death to Regan, Botha, Thatcher” and “Free Nelson Mandela & Larry Davis”.

The Black race apologist and front man for the police force are quick to delve into his teenage years to justify the police actions on the night of November 16, 1986. Many people are unaware of Larry’s history before his arrest. Larry and Shams started a record company to maintain as much control and ownership of their music. The two managed to release several records that sold considerably well in the New York City area. Larry and Sham literally sold records out the trunk of Larry’s car. They also traveled to different places to do shows and sold records at those shows. Sham used his connection to 98.7 KISS FM’s Kool DJ Red Alert to get airplay for their music. Eventually, their talents caught the attention of an artist manager named Bill Underwood who, at the time, was one of the few black men that held an executive position at a major record company. The company he worked for was Columbia Records.

Bill was so impressed with Larry and Sham’s skills that he offered the duo an exclusive production and recording contract with his label, Mozelle Records. He also paid for the two teenagers to go into a professional recording studio so they could develop songs for several other recording artists, including the popular R&B singer Johnny Gill, who was signed to Bill’s management company.

“When all that shit jumped off, the press said everything they could that was negative. They said he was a hit man. They said he was a vigilante. They called him the “crack city terminator”…  “When was on the run, they already creatin’ a climate that would justify them just goin’ and straight killin’ him. I know him. This is a man that took me off the streets when I was homeless. He had tears in his eyes and did everything he could to help my situation”, states Shams.

I remember a conversation my brother and myself had a few years ago, I asked him, “If the November 16, 1986 event didn’t happen, where would he and Larry be in terms of the music industry today?” He candidly replied, “Larry would be Suge Knight and he would be Russell Simmons.”

Plans were and still are underway for several business ventures i.e. books, movies and merchandising of t-shirts, hoodies and the now famous Larry Davis bomber, with all proceeds to benefit The Free Larry Davis Fund and his family. While the media remained clueless with little to none reports coming out, I wondered why?  My brother quickly informed me that “he never heard of a skillful general who intends to surprise a citadel announcing his plans to this enemy.”

Many people claiming to know Larry never even met the man and speak from inconsequential hearsay. The interest in his life has been fitful and will increase more due to his passing. Only those who walked or inhibit the grim streets of the South Bronx know the reality of dirty policeman that deal drugs, murder citizens and extort drug dealers. In the last few days I witness the media betrayed this man as a monster who murder people in cold blood. The only thing Larry was guilty of is refusing to be a victim of police brutality like Abner Louima or murdered like Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell.

The celebrated case made national history and showed the lawlessness of the police. With the help of famed Attorney William Kunstler (Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Martin Luther King) and Lynne Stewart and others, Larry was able to beat the quadruple homicide charges, plus the attempted murder of the nine police officers. But, they convicted him on a murder he did not do and charged him with possession of an illegal firearm.

We do know the name of the alleged assailant is Luis Rosado, a fellow Latin King serving 25 years to life for murder, assault and other crimes. What we do not know is if he was killed over ephemeral beef of ambiguous origins? The truth must be told. But, until then my brother lost a comrade and best friend and my nephew a godfather. Instead of mourning and sitting in grief over the lost, I decided to let life’s primal energies surge out through my pen and educate some folks on the true American Gangster,  R.I.P. Larry Davis.

Truth and Soul’s involvement with releases from Amy Winehouse and members of Wu-Tang Clan, as well as their reputation for releasing high quality soul and funk music, makes the release of this compilation highly anticipated.

Jose Parla, the compilation comprises a wide selection of contemporary music that has descended from the rhythm and blues, soul and funk music traditions. Fallin’ Off The Reel Vol. 2 has every Truth & Soul 45 single presented in chronological order from 2006 until now (available for the first time on CD), including one previously unreleased bonus track.

About Truth & Soul: When Soul Fire Records officially retired in 2004, Soul Fire house musicians Leon Michels and Jeff Silverman started their own label, Truth & Soul, which has now become a label and production house based out of Brooklyn, NY that specializes in creating deep funk and soul music. They have released a slew of 7″ and 12″ vinyl releases by bands such as El Michels Affair, Bama & The Family, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Timothy McNealy, Asiko, Bronx River Parkway, and many more. Hip Hop Icon Snoop Dogg Readies for Highly Anticipated Album ‘Ego Trippin” Due on March 11th

Posted by bigced on February 25, 2008

Superstar entertainer and hip hop icon “Snoop Dogg” readies for his highly anticipated ninth (9th) album, “Ego Trippin’”, due to release on March 11th on “Doggystyle/Geffen Records.”
Snoop titled the album “Ego Trippin’” because this time around, he’s showing fans a new side of his creativity. “After staying relevant for 16 years, I can afford to take chances and have some fun. I always made music to win in my neighborhood but after all these years I needed to do something bigger — I had to get out of my usual gangster zone without losing who I am, this time around I am going to win worldwide,” Snoop explains.

The exciting hip hop pioneer teamed up with the legendary producers “Teddy Riley” and “DJ Quik” to form the Executive Producing team, “QDT Muzik.” The trio started off just doing a couple of songs together but had such great chemistry in the studio that they decided to helm the complete project as one great force. “Snoop” came up with the song concepts, Teddy added his touches to the production and Quik mixed the entire album. The unexpected collaboration sparked creativity and magic in the studio which translated into an amazingly diverse and innovative album. In addition, “Ego Trippin’” marks the first time since “Doggystyle,” Snoop’s first album, that one individual mixed the entire package — adding a continuity to the sounds that play more like a movie instead of a music recording.

“Ego Trippin’” showcases groundbreaking material and if the well-received first single (#3 on R&R’s “Urban National Airplay” chart, #5 on Billboard’s “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs” chart, #8 on Billboard’s “Hot 100″ chart), the “Shawty Redd”-produced “Sensual Seduction” aka “Sexual Eruption” is any indication — fans will embrace the new sounds. “Snoop” recently shot the video for his second single, “Life of Da Party,” produced by “Scoop DeVille” and featuring another West Coast champ “Too $hort,” in Las Vegas. The black and white video, directed by “Pook Brown,” will showcase Snoop in true player fashion as the owner of a beautiful high-roller filled casino (filmed on location at The Palms Hotel Playboy Club).

Throughout the album, “Snoop” takes listeners on a musical journey and thematically “Ego Trippin’” pays tribute to those who inspired Snoop over the years. For the streets Snoop delivers “Neva have 2 Worry,” which is a candid retrospective of Snoop’s recording career that everyone can appreciate. He surprises the audience with the song “Johnny Cash” which was written and produced by “Whitey Ford” (aka “Everlast”). “Johnny Cash” is a country love ballad and is unlike anything anyone has ever heard from a hip hop superstar. One of Snoop’s album favorites is “Say Goodbye,” featuring R&B great “Charlie Wilson” of “The Gap Band.” Snoop says, “This song makes me want to cry every time I hear it. It is a reflection of my life and how I have grown as not only an artist but also a man. It is about me staying true to where I came from while having to accept where I am in my life today, it’s deep.”

“Snoop” gears up for the release of “Ego Trippin’” with a mini-tour that started on February 18th in New Orleans at The House of Blues and ends on March 2nd in Atlanta @ Dreamz (dates available upon request). Leading up to Snoop’s release week his schedule is chock-full of performances and appearances. You can catch him: On February 21st on BET’s “Rip the Runway,” on February 25th he appears on MTV’s “TRL,” and on March 6th he tapes a live set for Yahoo. Release week you can catch him in the NYC as he appears and/or performs on BET, VH1, MTV, Letterman, Conan, The View and One Life To Live. Also, currently graces the cover XXL magazine.

As if “Snoop” weren’t busy enough, he is also experiencing major success on the small screen with his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood.” The show takes viewers into the life of Snoop and his family, comprised of his wife and three kids, to prove he is really a down to earth family man. The show can be seen on Sundays at 10:30pm on E! Networks.

5 Questions With….. Kangol (Of U.T.F.O.)

Posted by bigced on February 25, 2008

By BIG CED

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1. For the people who may be too young to remember you or for the ones who have just gotten wind to the Hip-Hop game, could you please introduce yourself to the audience and explain why you are considered a legend in this game?

I am professionally known as “Kangol Kid”, a member of one of the first nationally recognized rap groups.  The group is called UTFO (UnTouchable Force Organization) and was made popular by our mid 80’s hit song “Roxanne, Roxanne”.  As for why I am considered a legend?  Several answers apply:

First dancer for a rap group (Whodini)
First rap/breakdance group (UTFO)
First rap group to perform at the World Famous Apollo Theater
First rap group to record an R&B love ballad (Fairytale Lover)
First artist to have over 25 remakes done in one year (Roxanne Answer Records)
First Haitian-American artist in Hip-Hop . . . and more.+

2. What are some of the more notable changes in today’s Hip-Hop that is substantially different from when you were more involved in Hip-Hop?

It is a fact that money enhances and/or destroys anything.  Therefore, it is fair to say that Hip-Hop has become a victim to such claim.  The love for the art is now replaced with the love of the money that the art generates.  Artists/groups are mass produced by moldings of previous success stories.  These days, it appears that creativity is seldom visible and is somewhat frowned upon opposed to applauded.

3. Since it seems that there is a misconception that once an artist is ‘done’, as far as being on top of the charts that they disappear into oblivion. What have you been up to recently and how do you stay connected in the game, if you do?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I am happy to say that I have had the good fortune of being more than a rapper in this entertainment industry.  My titles include: Songwriter, Music Producer, Choreographer, Artist Manager, Music Programmer, Sound Engineer, Public Speaker/Host, Vocal Arranger . . . ect.  I’ve recently scored two movies (an independent film and a documentary) and have won awards for both.  As for staying connected, I have three sons that are all in the business as well.  They keep me grounded with current events.

4. What type of reaction do you get when people realize who you are and your place in Hip-Hop history?

I am still amazed with the reaction I get.  Especially when artists I admire literally bow-down to me as a gesture of respect.  Though I attempt to give them that simultaneous respect, they refuse to accept it.  As for fans, I am still amazed at the male fans I encounter that jokingly say how much they hated me back in the day because their girlfriend had a huge crush on me and my posters all on their walls but yet they are happy to finally meet me in person.  Today, I enjoy my fans more than I did during my success because they behaved like fanatics more than fans.  I could not leave my home or go to the mall or movie theater without being mobbed.  It was so uncomfortable back then.  I love the love I get today.

5. If you could do anything in your career over again, what would it be, if any and why?

I wish I understood that was called a Music BUSINESS.  As a seventeen year old, I had no business skills whatsoever.  The Kangol Headwear company threatened to sue me for adopting their brand as my professional name and later dropped their threat and befriended me when they realized that every city I appeared in, their product sales were increasing so the legally allowed me to continue the usage provided that I do nothing to discredit their brand.  If I understood the business at that time, I would have turned that moment into one of the biggest deals in my life as a possible shareholder or something.  Not to mention the frenzy we caused with the Roxanne phenomenon.  I would have trademarked that name and created dolls, perfume, clothing line and a cartoon show called ‘Roxanne”.  Don’t let me get my hands on a time machine.

A YOUNG MERCENARY HUSTLER

Posted by bigced on February 25, 2008

by: Rahiem Shabazz

Few A&R’s embody real hip-hop the way Sickamore does. A staple on the mixtape circuit before he was out of High School, the name Sickamore became synonymous with “I Can Make You Famous,” which became the trademarked name of his company. It wasn’t long thereafter that the higher echelon at corporate labels noticed his remarkable record of taking relatively unknown artist and turning them into household names.

Street Masters Magazine sat down with the mercenary hustler to find out why Atlanta Records took the initiative to hire him as Director of A&R, what future projects he is working on and how he made the transition from mixtape DJ to the youngest A&R in the game. Take me back to your humble beginning and how it all began for you?

I started when I was fifteen years old doing custom CD’s for people in school. They’ll give me a list and I would make the CD’s for them. Someone suggested that I should put them in the stores. In 2001, I put 25 in a book bag and went to Canal Street in lower Manhattan to and to Brooklyn to a spot called On The Low.. The name of the CD was called Anthrax On Wax. They called me back the next day and said, “this CD is hot we want a hundred CD’S. Back in 01, the CD burner use to burn 1 every 20 minutes and I only had one little computer. Burning 3 every hour, you can imagine how long it took to burn 100 spindles of CD’s. But, I got it to them and I was in business from there.

How did you make the transition from Mixtape DJ to an A&R?

When I would drop off CD’s at Beat Street in Downtown Brooklyn, the manager Gary would always pick my brain and ask me for advice. One day, he asked me to become the A&R for his up and coming label. He paid me $600 a week and gave me a little office and things changed from there. Then Snoop Dog heard about me and flew me out to L.A. I started doing CD’s with him and when I got to New York everybody wanted me to host their CD. Then I started learning about getting sponsorship money. I took that money and went on the Roc The Mic Tour, which is where I met Just Blaze. I use to email Just Blaze over and over telling him, “Kanye is kicking your ass you got to get focus, and you got to get a artist. He said,  “find me an artist and then we will talk.” I told him, “if I find you an artist you got to make me A&R.” A month later I found Saigon and nine months later he signed him to Atlantic Records. Then Atlantic Senior Vice President of Urban A&R, Kyambo “Hip Hop” Joshua walked me into the President of Atlantic Records (Craig Kallman) who offered me the job.

Tell me about your company, “I Can Make You Famous” and the clients you represent?

“I Can Make You Famous” is an artist development firm where I manage and develop new talent. Saigon, Tru Life and Wynter Gordon are just a couple of the artist I signed. Tru Life was my first official client and we started a bidding war with him and he eventually got signed to Roc La Familia Records.

What are some of the projects you are overseeing at Atlantic Records? Grand Hustle (T.I.), Affiliates Music Group (DJ Drama), Choppa City (B.G.), 1st & 15th (Lupe Fiasco), and the soundtrack to HBO’s Entourage. I also work closely with Asylum/Warner Bros. What you see in the difference between the music scene in New York and Atlanta?

In New York you’re either or you’re not. If you are not Jay-Z or Steve Stoute, you are done. It’s the haves and the have not. In Atlanta everybody is more in between. Jermaine Dupri is not so big he can’t eat or party at the same party. In New York you go to the club you’re treated like a peon, you cannot have no hats, no sneakers etc. They do everything so you can’t come in. In Atlanta, the most popular club is still street. So if you are Ludacris or T.I you still got to come see me. In New York, I got to go see Giorgio Armani and then that’s how I know I’m popping. It’s bougie out. In Atlanta the scene is hungry. If I go to Glady’s Knight Chicken & Waffles, I might bump into anybody. I go to the studio everyone is working together and everyone is vibing with each other. Akrobatik: “Be Prepared” feat. Little Brother & 9th Wonder

Posted by bigced on February 25, 2008

Second single features Little Brother and production from 9th Wonder

The Song:
On Akrobatik’s second full-length solo release, the only thing more impressive than the star-studded guest list – Chuck D, J Dilla, Talib Kweli, to name a few– is the fact that he is not once overshadowed by the surrounding hip-hop giants. “Be Prepared,” featuring Little Brother and produced by 9th Wonder, exemplifies Ak’s ability to showcase other artists while keeping the listener informed as to whose album it really is. 9th Wonder, the possible co-star of “Be Prepared,” throws Ak a varied, sample-heavy beat to knock out the park with lines like, “I
don’t drive but always hear, ‘Ak, you’re a legend’ (Acura Legend). ” Sell your mittens, cop the album… guaranteed to keep you warm ’till spring.

The Background:
Known globally as one of Boston’s finest, Akrobatik beasted his way onto the scene at the start of the new millennium with Rawkus Records and a series of scathing singles. In 2003, he released his first full-length LP, Balance. The album won Ak a slew of awards in his hometown in addition to a first prize at the heralded International Songwriting Competition for “Remind My Soul,” a track regarded by many critics and fans as one of hip-hop’s finest compositions to date. Akrobatik is perhaps best known as one-third of The Perceptionists alongside Mr. Lif and DJ Fakts One, whose 2005 Def Jux release Black Dialogue was the only indie rap album on The Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Records Of The Year list.

Akrobatik is continually surrounded by hip-hop’s elite. Having toured with Eminem, The Roots, Edo G., and Guru, his 2008 LP Absolute Value features Talib Kweli, Chuck D, J Dilla, Little Brother, B-Real, and of course The Perceptionists. Akrobatik’s work has also been featured on HBO, on ESPN, and in NBA Live ‘06. Bostonians can tune in to JAM’N 94.5’s Morning Show for Akrobatik’s freestyled, daily sports recaps.
