T.S. Monk signs young rapper I’mani Kairee

Posted by bigced on February 6, 2008

Jazz musician T.S. Monk announced today that he has signed a developmental deal with I’mani Kairee for his growing Thelonious Records imprint.  The signing represents a new era for the label that is known for major jazz works, such as the monumental 2005 release Thelonious Monk Quartet Featuring John Coltrane – Live at Carnegie Hall (released in partnership with Blue Note Records).

The label will continue to release rare works by jazz icon Thelonious Monk, and new recordings by his son, T. S. Monk, in addition to their new hip hop projects.

A maxi-single and video for I’mani Kairee’s “Only One” will debut online this week, and a full length album is in the works for later this year.

I’mani Kairee
Respect Me, Respect Yourself, And We’ll Get Along Fine

Her idols are Kanye, her mother and God.  Not in that order.

Charismatic rapper I’mani, 18, is still on curfew, but she doesn’t mind.  She’s thrilled to be alive, and doing what she loves; performing. She has the heart of an old soul; warm and worldly.  She’s excited to be able to vote, and wants to encourage other young people to exercise that precious gift.  Her social conscience, eagerness to help steer the destiny of her America, and personal modesty set I’mani apart from the more flirty-dirty, eager-to-please girl rappers.

Her name translates to ‘faith,’ and she wears it well.

“For me, rap over R&B is what came easy and stuck to me. It doesn’t get boring. When I hear a beat I start thinking what hook I can come up with, I’ll have rap songs with R&B hooks. I’m still doing age-related stuff, about crushes; my song ‘Ready to Party’ is funny stuff about what teenagers go through. I’m not trying to be a role model, but sometimes it comes off that way.”

“Women are always queens to me. You don’t have to show your body to be sexy.  I want them to say that I’mani is sexy and classy at the same time. Showing your body, you’ll get the wrong kind of attention.”

I’mani sees herself in service to others. “In five years I see myself helping people; In my song, ‘Dream Big,’ I thank God for getting me this far.  I say ‘Dream past the clouds, for the stars, the moon.’  That’s what really touches me…  In ‘Get it Poppin’ I’m just saying that I’m here – I’m a new, fresh young talent…  not every song is a message song.”

An only child raised by a single mom, I’mani benefited from a solid upbringing: “My mother is my role model, she’s backed me up through this whole process.”

Kanye West was also an important role model for I’mani:  “I just love his work. He’s clever with words.”

But was growing up in Connecticut a sheltered existence?  Where does she get her material?  I’mani cautions: “Don’t make the mistake of thinking that nothing happens here! Bad things happen in good neighborhoods!” Still her message is about being good. “I feel good about doing more healing through music. I use absolutely no profanity in my lyrics;  it makes me a better songwriter to be able to find other words to express things, I don’t need it as filler; I make up my own words.”

A self-described ‘young lady,’ I’mani is concerned about more than just boys, clothes and parties, although for sure, you will find these mentioned in her rapid fire delivery. Her interest in Darfur, presidential and local politics, education and healing through her music define her as a rapper with depth and the potential to develop along the lines of a Kanye, whose political perspectives are well documented through his lyrics. I’mani’s mantra is to ‘Dream Big,’ good advice for a young unknown who was blessed to be taken under the benevolent wing of Thelonious Monk, Jr.; son of the jazz great.  A two-song agreement eventually led to an album, which is in works for release through Monk’s Thelonious Records imprint.

I’mani met Monk through a friend who brought them to Butterzone. It was there that she met Producers Floyd Fisher and Extra Large.  I’mani and the Butterzone hit it off immediately. “We were like pieces of a puzzle that just fit.” I’mani is feeling the love all round. “Thelonious is incredible; every time I talk to him, he just smiles and you know it’s gonna be good. He called me and said; you’re doing great! For someone that’s been in the biz this long, to take a chance on me…I thank God for putting this amazing person in my path.”

I’mani understands the precarious world of survival in the music business. She appreciates education as an essential. “I graduated, but my biggest frustration was school. Teachers nowadays are not so helpful. A lot of kids need a lot of motivation, and when teachers are upbeat and want kids to graduate, it makes a big difference. I did graduate and I’m so grateful. I’m going to go to fashion design school in New York, and take some courses. I like fashion and style; I’m always looking for ways to make something unique; make it my own.”  I’mani also loves to cook. “I experiment! I’m not saying that everything comes out great!”

Importantly, she isn’t ‘bling-blind’: “When I’m making money, first I want to invest, then put money back into the world. I’d like to do something to help single parents…it’s challenging! My mom did it.” With no brothers or sisters, is I’mani lonely? She smiles, hugs her mom. “No, I get all the love.”

The Monday Polly: Haiti (Love It or Aid It)

Posted by bigced on February 6, 2008

Written by The CZA

When I originally set out to do this column, I wanted it to be as objective and unbiased as I could make it. I wanted to stay out of the way with my (often warped) sense of self and deliver straight facts to my readers for themselves to decide how they feel. You don’t need me telling you that; the television in your living room does a damn fine job. Before this becomes a multi-paragraphed monologue taking shots at people/organizations, let me get to this week’s Polly.  And to “throwing my objectiveness out the window” this week. You ridin’? Knew you would.

How is it that countries get to be in such dire situations like the one Haiti is facing right now? There are other countries that have fared worse, but I chose Haiti because of its combination of political upheaval, economic devaluation and influence from other countries.

You Gon’ Eat Yo’ Con’Bread?!?

The state of the poor in Haiti isn’t great, but you already knew that. There are many, many people who live in the slums that don’t eat that often and rely on alternative means of chasing away the hunger pangs. One means of surviving  are “cookies” made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening.

The problem comes from that being the only food at times, and with it being both unsanitary and problematic to health, change must come and soon. The dirt can contain deadly toxins or parasites within it, and continued eating of it can run the risk of malnutrition or worse.

But with the price of two bare cups of rice being a staggering sixty cents (considering that the norm people live on is $2.00 daily, that’s huge) there isn’t much of an alternative. The U.N. declared a state of emergency for Haiti and other Caribbean countries and held a summit to discuss cutting food taxes and create farming in various regions to stem the need for import.

Some blame the super increase on the few controlling the economy, the global price hikes and one of the worst hurricane seasons in recent memory. Haiti has been one of the least-developed countries in the Americas, owing this to the numerous violent outbursts and political upset. (It’s kind of hard to get things going in a positive direction when the majority of your leaders are either corrupt, assassinated, run out of office or instilled by U.S. armed force.) It’s estimated that approximately 80% of the population live in squalor with zero economic growth.

Education is another pothole that the country has run afoul with the numbers being barely under half of the 8 million citizens being illiterate and less than 30% even finishing the sixth grade. The majority of the schools are non public and controlled by neighboring communities. Wyclef Jean is one of the country’s biggest supporters through his Yele Haiti foundation that provides scholarships for underprivileged students with more than 9,000 grants given.

Tropical Storm Jeanne killed over 6,000 people in 2004 (largely in Garnalves and near the southern border of the Dominican Republic) because of massive deforestation, and the soil is eroding rapidly.

I think I’ll inject a little bit of how I feel into this joint; even though I said earlier that I was “throwing objectiveness out the window”, I’ve been trying to refrain from talking down on any particular branch giving aid. I mean,  I’m not Haitian, I do have some French in my lineage, but I can’t truthfully say that my life has ever been comparable to what’s been going on over there in the slightest. For that, I am lucky. I just see the world for what it should be, and could be: a community of people who wouldn’t let the next man get down on his luck like that, not just “making it rain”, but helping to cultivate the various aspects that make the country unique instead of simply coming in and imposing a foreign governmental set-up the people don’t agree with. Are we doing enough? That I don’t know. I just hope we do all that we can. Check out yele.org for contribution information. It’s 2008, y’all…we shouldn’t be eating no damn dirt cookies!

Drop a line at themondaypolly@gmail.com and let me know what y’all think or leave it in the reply form below. Until next time, keep it movin’, positive and productive. Uno Bravado!

Devin the Dude Decides to Puff Puff Pass on Rap-A-Lot

Posted by bigced on February 6, 2008

After more than 15 years with his one and only record label, Devin the Dude has decided not to renew his contract with Rap-A-Lot Records in an effort to pursue other career options. Since signing his deal with the Odd Squad on Rap-A-Lot records in 1992, the legendary comedic rapper has been splitting the spleens of hip-hop lovers with his hilarious brand of risqué funk with each project.  Releasing their first album together Fadanuf Fa Erybody in 1994 the group’s unique style, flow and themes quickly made them a favorite on the underground.

Recognizing his genuine appeal, Houston’s Godfather of hip-hop invited Devin to join another group, Face Mob which only put out one album together (The Other Side of the Law, 1996). When Face Mob broke up it was time for Devin to strike out on his own and he delivered his first solo classic The Dude. As a fan of Smokey Robinson’s LP of the same title, Devin’s first solo offering was filled with the same style of funk laden grooves doused with the Coughee Bros signature brand of smoothed out hip-hop production and secured The Dude as a classic hip-hop album with his ode to Wine, Women and Weed. Although the album lacked the commercial success many felt it deserved, it brought Devin to the attention of the likes of Dr. Dre who invited the rapper to do a verse on the hit single “F*%k You” on Dre Dre’s Chronic album in 2001 catapulting him to another level in the game.

Devin recorded three solo albums with Rap-A-Lot over the course of the last 10 years Just Trying 2 Live (2002) 2 Tha Extreme (2004) and delivering yet another classic with his final album Waiting to Inhale which dropped March 07. “Rap-A-Lot has been my family for a long time and there’s no bad blood at all,” Explains Devin of his decision to leave the label, “But change is a part of life and I feel like this is the time to make a change and focus more on the business side of my career, I’ve had a nice run so I’d like to develop artists and give some of these other cats out here a platform to shine.” Devin has spent this past year touring with his original Coughee Bros. promoting the recently released independent project “Waitin Our Turn”. With several offers on the table for label situations, Devin is exploring options right now but is ready to get back in the lab and blow out another batch of his finest music for a new generation of music lovers.

Keenan’s Weekly Rants, Raves & Revelries – Come Correctly – 2/1/08

Posted by bigced on February 6, 2008

So, last week I ran a piece from my brethren, Ghostwriter BajanKinch, well that piece was in response to a piece written by a young lady we’ll call Ghostwriter JessJ. It’s a long piece so, just like last week, make sure you click through to read it all. JessJ calls this one: Come Correctly: She Said (part 1)

The secret to winning an all-season boo

If you’re a female – and you’re breathing – chances are you’ve been the victim of a holla. (By holla we mean a frivolous, and often failed, attempt of a guy to “get at” a girl with annoying one-liners like “Hey little mama you look good,” “What yo’ name is?” or “Can I get in them jeans?”) A lady can’t even walk down the street without someone from the male gender bombarding her with this nonsense. Let’s be real. Do males really think these tired lines work on women? After the classic, “Dannnnnng mommy you look good! Can I get yo’ number?” do you envision us replying with: “Aww, really? Yes; I always knew you were the one?” (For the record, if she is not your mom, she probably doesn’t like you calling her mommy, either.) Better yet, after you see us walking down the street and you whistle out the window of your souped up bucket, do you expect us to hijack the next biker we see and peddle after you in an attempt to follow-up? Take a minute and think to yourself: has this childish behavior ever really worked?

I didn’t think so.

And if you are continuing to justify your actions with that single incident last year when it was successful, you’re way off. The one girl who did respond to your ridiculousness was either a.) insecure b) desperate c) tacky/hood d) carrying an STD or e) all of the above. If this is what you want, then go for it – but if not, listen up. In an effort to stop the madness, and maybe even prompt a connection, I have come up with a handy list on how to get the attention of a classy lady.

DON’T RUSH IT
This is perhaps the most important step. Take a minute. Be easy. What’s the rush? Spend a few minutes asking the girl some questions about herself. And if you are seeing her on a regular basis (i.e. school or work) don’t holla at her the first time you approach her. Act like you just want to get to know her and the holla simply ensued because, upon getting to know her, you liked what you saw (not because you thought she was cute).

BE ORIGINAL
Steer clear of the cliché questions like, “Where are you from?” and “What do you like to do for fun?” The city that you are both in is probably the same city she is from. Half of the time you don’t even know what you mean by that question. I often find myself having to give a hefty-and pointless-explanation when a guy asks me where I’m from. More often than not, he means “Do you reside here?” not “Where were you born?” See it’s confusing even explaining it. Also, the “What do you like to do for fun?” question is just as unavailing. What do you mean what do we like to do for fun? The same things everyone does: hang out with friends, go to the movies, travel, shower, read, and occasionally stare at the wall. Not joking.

As I said there’s more to this one but, it’s a bit much to read in your email so, if you wanna keep reading just follow this link:

It’s a month strong and Vivid at Opus 22 is looking like it’s here to stay. You gotta love a party that got nothing else around it. That way you know that when it’s poppin’ in there, everybody came for the same reason. They didn’t just walk by randomly and they don’t got plans to be going anywhere else! Don’t nobody be walking up the Westside highway looking for parties! Vivid at Opus 22 is a destination and apparently it’s the destination of many. You already know, hit me for the list or just meet me at 22nd and 11th tonight!

hedonis 1Philly Femcee links with Kay Slay for yet another mixtape
Hedonis presents Intimidation

New York, NY Jan 31st 2008 -
She has constantly delivered classic material to both fans and the industry. This time is no different. Hedonis Da Amazon does it again with her new mixtape Intimidation. From the choice of beats to the features to linking once again with the Drama King himself DJ Kay Slay, Hedonis leaves no space for slacking.

Having continuously maintained her presence as a female lyricist with appearances on VH1s Driven: Cutthroat, showcases throughout the East coast and a slew of personal mixtapes and appearances on those of others, Hedonis is held in high regard by her male peers and her female contemporaries. “With Intimidation, Hedonis has taken a stance for female rap and has re-established credibility to the name femcee,” Darin Toliver, 1derful Management.hedonis 3

Intimidation heralds collaborations with Jacki-O, Babs Bunny, Ebony Eyez, Gail Gotti, proving that unity does exist within the female hierarchy of Hip-Hop. But without wanting to exclude the males of Hip-Hop Hedonis also called upon the likes of Mike Knox and Aftermath recording artist G.A.G.E.
